But we don\u2019t always believe search engine results, do we?!<\/p>\n<p>Consent is vital in every relationship, as is the \u2018L\u2019 in LGBTQ+, which is why we wanted to address consent in the lesbian community specifically. For lesbians, active and continuous consent matters because it ensures <strong>mutual pleasure<\/strong>, establishes <strong>safe boundaries<\/strong>, and dismantles the harmful societal myth that women are not perpetrators of abuse and do not need to negotiate intimacy.<\/p>\n<p>Consent is just as critical in queer spaces as anywhere else, and it serves several specific purposes for lesbians. <strong>Firstly, it takes away the assumption of gender roles. <\/strong>Assuming that a partner adheres to specific masculine or feminine personas (or assuming everyone operates the same way) is common. Asking for consent ensures partners are not pressured to act against their natural desires or comfort levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prioritising consent also ensures there is a focus on enthusiastic participation.<\/strong> Sex between women thrives on clear communication. Because there are fewer traditional scripts or examples for lesbian sex, ongoing communication (checking in with a &#8220;may I&#8221; or &#8220;do you like this?&#8221;) turns consent into a tool for amplifying pleasure rather than just a legal formality.<\/p>\n<p>It also prioritises<strong> individual boundaries.<\/strong> Every woman has unique boundaries and bodies react differently from day to day. Continuous consent ensures that touching, kissing, and using toys only happen when all parties involved are fully willing and comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Challenging the Narrative<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Heteronormative narratives and scripts still dominate, so positive examples of healthy lesbian relationships or navigating consent have to be sought out rather than stumbled over. But they are available, and worth checking out if you haven\u2019t already.<\/p>\n<p>Our favourites include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dani Clayton &amp; Jamie Taylor (<\/strong><em><strong>The Haunting of Bly Manor<\/strong><\/em><strong>):<\/strong> Celebrated for their grounded communication and unwavering support. They navigate immense gothic trauma with gentle boundaries, becoming a fan-favourite example of a secure, mature, and deeply loving partnership.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Waverly Earp &amp; Nicole Haught (<\/strong><em><strong>Wynonna Earp<\/strong><\/em><strong>):<\/strong> Affectionately known as &#8220;WayHaught,&#8221; this pairing is praised for breaking the &#8220;bury your gays&#8221; trope. Their relationship centres on mutual protection, open honesty, and a healthy progression from dating to marriage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stef Foster &amp; Lena Adams Foster (<\/strong><em><strong>The Fosters<\/strong><\/em><strong>):<\/strong> A stable, loving marriage anchoring a bustling family. They serve as a prime model for conflict resolution, co-parenting, and weathering professional or financial stress as a unified team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sarah Paulson &amp; Holland Taylor (Real Life):<\/strong> A prominent real-life celebrity couple who demonstrate enduring mutual respect and unwavering public support for one another&#8217;s careers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amy Santiago &amp; Rosa Diaz \/ Characters (<\/strong><em><strong>Brooklyn Nine-Nine<\/strong><\/em><strong>):<\/strong> While Rosa has several partners over the series, her relationships are treated with total normalcy, highlighting healthy independence, boundaries, and coming out with the support of her found family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Navigating Consent<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Heterosexual dynamics often rely on culturally understood male-initiator\/female-recipient sexual scripts. In lesbian relationships, both partners may be unsure how to initiate or navigate consent without these preconceived rules. This can lead to an over-reliance on non-verbal cues and discomfort voicing needs. Fear of rejection, coupled with a lack of comprehensive LGBTQ+ inclusive sex education and related resources, can cause partners to avoid discussing their sexual boundaries altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Partners may also sometimes consent to sex because they are willing to please their partner or maintain the relationship, even if they don&#8217;t actively desire it at that moment. People can also feel pressure to maintain the lesbian stereotype of sex lasting a long time. Communication is vital here either way to avoid it becoming a pattern of people-pleasing that breeds resentment or erodes mutual sexual agency.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, communication is vital as the relationship develops. The U-haul stereotype, in lesbian and queer culture, refers to the idea that women who date women move in together very quickly. Consent matters here in being able to confidently state what you do or don\u2019t feel ready for. Turbo dating should never be pressured or coerced.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, it\u2019s important to counter the myth that women are inherently safe. Because women are generally socialised to be less physically aggressive than men, there is a dangerous misconception that woman-on-woman abuse or non-consensual sexual pressure does not happen. This myth can cause victims to downplay their experiences or suffer in silence without recognizing that boundary violations (such as pressuring, pestering or unwanted touching) are forms of coercion.<\/p>\n<p>Coercive control and sexual violence do occur in lesbian relationships. One unique dynamic is the potential weaponisation of a partner&#8217;s identity or the \u2018closet\u2019. For instance, a partner might use the threat of outing someone to family, coworkers, or their community as a form of manipulation or pressure to comply with sexual acts.\u00a0 The effect can be amplified where one of the parties is gender diverse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Help is available<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We know that it can also be more difficult for lesbians to reach out for support when they are experiencing domestic abuse or sexual violence.\u00a0 Often dealt with under the umbrella of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), social expectations are that the perpetrator is male and the victim-survivor is female.<\/p>\n<p>Turning this social narrative on its head can make it more difficult to both recognise abuse and then reach out for support.\u00a0 It can also feel difficult to discuss your experiences with people from the LGBTQ+ community, people are more likely to know one another.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Nottingham\/shire has a specialist LGBTQ+ domestic abuse service.\u00a0 Run by Equation, they offer a specialist helpline, options exploration and emotional and practical support.\u00a0 You can find out <a
