Joint Statement on Marilyn Manson Gig in Nottingham

Nottingham has a proud and longstanding commitment to tackling misogyny and violence against women and girls. Our city has led the way nationally, from pioneering the recording of misogyny as a hate crime, to the powerful work of the Consent Coalition, and the city-centre Safe Space pledge.

As organisations supporting women and girls, we see first hand the devastating and real impact of misogyny. This is not a theoretical issue. Across England and Wales, over 2 million women experience violence each year, and violence against women and girls now makes up nearly 20% of all recorded crime.

These figures are stark, and they reflect the reality that too many women continue to live with fear, harm, and injustice. This is why our focus must be on listening to women, challenging harmful attitudes, and supporting the organisations working every day to create a safer and more equal society.

Offering a platform to someone known for promoting misogynistic views does not reflect the values we stand for as a city. While venues are entitled to choose who they host,  businesses and services benefit from Nottingham’s reputation as safe and inclusive. We are pleased to see male allies taking a stand for women’s safety.  We encourage everyone to do the same, and respond with their feet and their wallets. You can make a difference by supporting local groups tackling misogyny and violence against women and girls. Together, we can continue to uphold the values that Nottingham is rightly proud of.
